Lebanon vs Saudi Arabia
Competition: AFC Asian Cup
Date: 12 January 2019
Kick-off: 17:00 CET
Lebanon were left feeling they deserved better, after losing 2-0 to Qatar. They scored first, they celebrated like crazy, but after more than half a minute they realized that the referee had disallowed the goal, having given a foul for a push(?) away from the ball. There is no doubt there is a push, but… you have to wonder what would happen if such type of pushes (especially in corner-kicks) were given as fouls in every game. There are pushes and pushes, and I was left with the impression that Lebanon’s goal should have stood. It didn’t, they managed to at least keep a clean sheet in the first half, but in the second one they conceded twice, and lost the game, 2-0. Should be mentioned that offensively, annulled goal-aside, Lebanon looked poor.
Saudi Arabia were not the better team on the pitch in the first half when they faced North Korea the other day, they were the only team on the pitch. By halftime, the score was at 2-0, but could have easily been bigger than that. The Koreans sort of fought back in the second half, but Saudi Arabia’s goalkeeper did an awesome job keeping a clean sheet, and they kept taking advantage of Korea’s defensive… mess, scoring two more goals. Resounding victory, convincing performance, three points, exactly what Saudi Arabia were hoping for on their Asian Cup debut. It was particularly positive seeing them stay serious in the second half, despite the fact that they had a comfortable lead, and were playing against 10 men.

I’m definitely backing Saudi Arabia to win the game. I feel the quality gap between the two is too big to allow the Lebanese to produce a surprise.
