Lekhwiya vs Persepolis
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 30 May 2017
Kick-off: 21:00 CET
Lekhwiya were left with a bittersweet taste after their 0-0 draw in Tehran last week. They were playing in front of empty stands, because Persepolis were punished for trouble caused by their fans in previous games. Under the circumstances, the Qatari side had a golden chance to score that all too precious away goal, that would make them ‘bosses’ of this tie. Instead, they had their goalkeeper as their best player, doing his absolute best to keep a clean sheet. Attacking midfielder Tae-Hee Nam was dangerous every time he touched the ball, but other than him, Lekhwiya looked rather… shy offensively. In this game, they will need to be much-much better in the final third, while also keeping an eye on the back.
Persepolis must feel they deserved something much better than a simple 0-0 draw in their home game last week. They failed to take advantage of the numerous chances they created. Especially three of those were hard to miss, but still, they missed them. They even missed a penalty in the 82nd minute. A chance to score doesn’t get much bigger than that. What’s very-very important for them is that they kept a clean sheet. Scoring even just once in Doha, will give them the upper hand. Even if they go down early in the game, they will still know that a single goal will be enough to send them through to the next stage.
Lekhwiya vs Persepolis: Head-to-head Stats
Lekhwiya have hosted Persepolis once before, in 2015, and they beat them 3-0, in an AFC Champions League group game.
Lekhwiya vs Persepolis: Prediction
Lekhwiya had three wins at home in the group stage, by a total score of 9-2. Only Esteghlal Khuzestan managed to… lose by just one goal, 2-1, while Al Jazira and Al Fateh lost 3-0 and 4-1 respectively. There is no doubt that at home is where Lekhwiya thrive, but having failed to score in Tehran, they will have to be doubly careful defensively. Persepolis have won just one of their last five games away from home, but in this case, a draw with goals will be enough for them to qualify, will be like a win. What’s… worrying for them is that they have failed to score in three of their last four games on the road. Everything considered, I’m backing the hosts to win and to qualify.
Lekhwiya vs Persepolis: Tips
A Lekhwiya win pays 1.90. Unlike last week’s game, I expect this one to have goals, and I’m taking it a step further, by predicting at least three.
