Levadiakos vs Lamia
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 6 November 2017
Kick-off: 18:30 CET
Levadiakos have no one to blame for that 1-0 loss at AEL Larissa last weekend but themselves. First, they missed a bunch of chances, some even huge ones, to score at least once. Then, they gave away a cheap foul in the fourth minute of added time, 60 seconds before the final whistle. It was at the center of the field, and it gave Larissa the chance to… organize themselves, send all their players into Levadiakos’ box, and give it one last try to score and “steal” the game at the death. That’s exactly what happened. Levadiakos defended poorly, they left a Larissa player all alone just a meter and a half from their goal line, he headed the ball in, 1-0, end of story. It’s… anything between incredible and ridiculous, because Levadiakos were undefeated in eight matches, meaning since day one of the season, they had avoided losing against much-much stronger sides, they had avoided losing in games they had played with numerical disadvantage, and still, somehow, they “managed” to lose at Larissa, the way they lost… Come to think of it one last time, it’s mostly ridiculous and less incredible…
Every little detail went Lamia’s way last weekend when they hosted Platanias, and they won the game 2-0. First, Lamia got saved by their horizontal post, staying at 0-0 until halftime. Early in the second half, a Platanias defender and their goalkeeper competed in “let’s see who can commit the biggest mistake”, and the winner was Vasilantonopoulos (good luck reading and pronouncing that if you’re not Greek), his first goal of the season. Playing against an opponent whose morale was too-too low, Lamia hang on to that 1-0 lead until deep into added time, when Vasilantonopoulos completed a dream game for him (and Lamia), making it 2-0. Lamia are sitting 9th in the table, having surprised everyone (as a newly-promoted and low-budget team).
