Levadiakos vs Olympiakos
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 13 January 2019
Kick-off: 16:15 CET
In Greece, when players reach the yellow card limit, it’s the clubs that decide which game those players will miss. On Friday, Levadiakos decided that right-back (and captain) Savas Tsabouris and defensive midfielder Pavlos Mitropoulos will miss this weekend’s game, against Olympiakos. They could have chosen to have them unavailable next weekend, against Apollon Smyrnis, but that match is a “must-win” for Levadiakos, hence their choice. It’s not exactly that they are throwing the Olympiakos match under the bus, it’s mostly that… realistically, they know their chances of winning this weekend’s game are few, even if they played with their best possible lineup, while next weekend every single regular player will be needed, 101%. Levadiakos are second-to-last in the table, on just eight points from 14 matches.
Olympiakos are eight points behind leaders PAOK in the Super League, and they have to visit them in Thessaloniki in the second round, but Pedro Martins, the Piraeus side’s coach, told reporters they are aiming at winning the championship title, and their second target in the second half of the season is to reach the Europa League final(!). Actually, the latter, they have been repeating it since the start of the season, and the fact that they eliminated AC Milan in the Europa League group stage has further pumped their confidence. In the meantime, midweek, they failed to beat Xanthi away from home, in the first leg of their Greece Cup round of 16 tie. The fact that they failed to score (0-0), may cost them dearly in the return leg.
