Levadiakos vs Panathinaikos
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 3 February 2019
Kick-off: 16:15 CET
Levadiakos lost at AEK midweek, 1-0, but they put in a decent display. They were playing away from home against the reigning champions (no matter if they are third this season, far behind leaders PAOK), so you can’t really blame the Livadia side for that defeat on Wednesday. It was the first goal they conceded in three matches, another positive. Levadiakos are second-to-last in the table, on 12 points from 19 matches. They need to finish at least 13th, which is the spot that allows a team to keep hoping to avoid relegation in a single play-off match against the second-placed of the Football League (second division). It should be mentioned that Levadiakos have scored just one goal in their last four matches, good enough to beat Aris 1-0.
Panathinaikos beat Panetolikos 0-1 midweek, and it was their own players who first admitted that it wasn’t their performance that earned them all three points, but their… attitude. Panathinaikos played the way they hadn’t played against Larissa, or Lamia, or even Xanthi in the first half. They looked determined to win the game, “no matter what”, and that attitude led them to a win they desperately needed. The Greens are 5th in the table, on 27 points, three behind Atromitos. Be reminded, even if they finished in a Europa League spot, they won’t play international football nest season, because of the three-year ban imposed on them by UEFA. There is hope, slim, very slim, that UEFA could erase the ban in April or May, but for that to happen, Panathinaikos need to find a new… boss, someone who will pay the money needed to cover all debts, and take over from the current main shareholder. The chances of that happening are very few, at least in the foreseeable future. Interestingly, coach Giorgos Donis gave his players a day off, despite playing every 3-4 days, feeling they needed 24 hours of… non-football distraction to recharge their batteries.
