Libertad vs Universidad Catolica
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 6 March 2019
Kick-off: 01:30 CET
Libertad didn’t score in Medellín last week, as I expected them, but they still qualified, as predicted here, even on penalties. They had beaten Atlético Nacional 1-0 in Asunción, they lost by the same score in Colombia, but in the penalty shootout they did a better job, and left Atanasio Girardot with a golden ticket to the Copa Libertadores group stage. After all the money they spent in December and January to strengthen the squad, it would have been a blow to them to miss out on the group stage, without, obviously, underestimating Atlético Nacional, one of South America’s greats. On Sunday (yes, on Sunday, two days before this match), they beat Sportivo San Lorenzo 2-1 at home, playing, obviously, with a super alternative lineup. The return leg against Atlético Nacional was on Thursday, so there was not enough time to have three days between that match AND the one against Sportivo San Lorenzo AND Universidad Católica. “Kudos” to CONMEBOL for making them play on Thursday and then again on Tuesday, totally disregarding their national championship.
Universidad Católica are the reigning champions in Chile, with a direct ticket to the Copa Libertadores group stage coming as a well-deserved reward. Last time they appeared in the competition was two years ago. They earned five points from their first three group matches, they seemed to be well on their way to the round of 16, but the… lights went off in their last three group games, losing all three, despite scoring in all three (they conceded eight goals, though). Last Friday they beat Audax Italiano 0-2, on the road, scoring both goals in the second half. Audax had a player sent-off, Católica scored soon after that, Audax had another player sent-off(!), and Católica managed to put the game to bed only in added time, with their second goal, having at the same time a player sent-off themselves as well. They are on six points from three matches in Chile’s recently-started championship.
