Mainz vs Bayer Leverkusen
Competition: Germany Bundesliga
Date: 8 February 2019
Kick-off: 20:30 CET
You could call that a slap on the face… Mainz visited Augsburg last weekend having won their first two Bundesliga matches in 2019, scoring a total of five goals past Stuttgart (2-3) and Nurnberg (2-1). They were visiting a team that had lost three Bundesliga games in a row, conceding either two or three goals in each match. With all these in mind, the final 3-0 last weekend, was… more like a punch on the stomach, rather than a slap on the face for Mainz. They dropped 11th in the table, on 27 points. Unlike their visitors, they had a full week to prepare for this match. They should start with Müller, Brosinski, Bell (back from suspension), Niakhate, Martin, Öztunali, Kunde, Gbamin, Boëtius, Quaison and Mateta. Three guys were considered doubtful the day before the match, Bungert, Latza and Mwene. Coach Sandro Schwarz definitely doesn’t have injured Adler and Berggreen at his disposal.
From zenith to nadir… Last weekend, Bayer Leverkusen impressed the whole of Germany, Europe, someone could say the whole football world, wherever the Bundesliga is followed by simple fans, beating Bayern Munich 3-1, a Bayern side that had been winning non-stop for weeks and weeks, starting in 2018. Come Tuesday, Peter Bosz’s team made the headlines again, but not for a good reason; they “managed” to get eliminated by Heidenheim, a second-tier team, in the DFB Pokal, losing 2-1 away from home, and that, despite the fact that they took the lead just before halftime. A real shock for Leverkusen… They are 7th in the Bundesliga table, higher than any week before this season, but on the other hand, they have a Europa League game coming up in Russia, so, according to reports, Bosz is willing to rest some regulars. Hradecky, Weiser, Tah, S. Bender, Wendell, Havertz, Aranguiz, Brandt, Bellarabi, Alario and Volland, these are expected to be the first 11. The day before the match, Kohr, Havertz and Bailey were considered doubtful. The latter, scored an impressive goal against Bayern last weekend, his first since September(!). Lars Bender, Pohjanpalo and Retsos remain out, injured.

Mainz vs Bayer Leverkusen: Head to head Stats
Two wins for the hosts and three for Leverkusen in the last five matches between these two in Mainz.
Mainz vs Bayer Leverkusen: Prediction
I like Mainz’s chances of earning at least a draw, despite their “with the hands down” defeat at Augsburg last weekend. Unlike Leverkusen, they didn’t play midweek, and again, unlike Leverkusen, they are not… distracted by an international match coming up.
Mainz vs Bayer Leverkusen: Betting Tips
Mainz’s double chance is at 1.90, my main tip. Combined with “over 1.5”, it pays 2.50. The last few games between these two teams in Mainz have had many goals, whatever that means…
