Manchester City vs Monaco
Competition: UEFA Champions League
Date: 21 February 2017
Kick-off: 20:45 CET
Manchester City have been flip-flopping between being incredible and downright disastrous, and their group stage two leg game against Barcelona attests to that where they lost badly, and then won well. Now, as they face their first knockout game, against Monaco, they are on the rise, but Monaco are in red hot form too.
Monaco are top of League 1 in France and are putting more established teams like PSG and Nice to the sword. It is their form in the domestic league that has seen them also do well in the Champions League with their last 13 games seeing them win 11, and draw the other two, for an extended undefeated run. In their group stages Monaco finished top in an unexpected move as teams like Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen were tipped to impress, but with the likes of Radamel Falcao finding his form in front of goal again, the French side have a really good chance in this encounter.
For Pep and his men, the Champions League is much more familiar ground than the Premier League and he will hope to exploit that, and the home ground advantage as well as the good form domestically City find themselves in. With his full strength side, Pep will feel there is enough in the tank to take on the high flying French side as they forget about their disappointing 0-0 draw in the FA Cup. Again it will be the home ground scoring record they hope to take through, having scored in every home game this season.
Manchester City vs Monaco: Group stage form
Manchester City were probably lucky that there was no real threat to topple them from second as Barcelona were always expected to take first ahead of them. Their form was poor in the group as they won only two games, drew three and lost one against Barcelona.
Monaco’s table topping performance came on the back of three wins, two draws and also just the one loss, and they did have to sneak ahead of Leverkusen who were a point behind them at the end of the group stages.
Manchester City vs Monaco: Prediction
Manchester City have a lot of things going for them for this first clash, the home advantage and their record at home is the first point of call, and on top of that City have been a team that plays on form, and they are at least at a peak heading towards this game. Pep rested some players so they will be fresh. However, Monaco are no pushovers and will come out swinging, expect a close win, with goals, for City.
Manchester City vs Monaco: Tips
City can score multiple goals and their home record says they will score in this game, but so will Monaco so bet on a 2-1 win for City with Falcao getting Monaco’s goal.
