Mexico vs Honduras
Competition: CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying
Date: 9 June 2017
Kick-off: 04:00 CET
El Tri are leaders in the ‘Hexagonal’ and playing at home against one of the weakest sides of the bunch is an awesome opportunity for them to further strengthen their position. Remember that it’s not just the first of the group who makes it to Russia 2018, but all teams that finish in the top-three. It’s the fourth spot Mexico definitely want to avoid, because the last thing they need is to go through playoffs against a team from Asia to secure their presence in the World Cup finals. In their two friendly games the last ten days, they lost to Croatia, 2-1, but then they beat Ireland 3-1, looking much better. Mexico have been impressive defensively so far in the ‘Hexagonal’, having conceded just one goal, and that was in a game they won (2-1 at USA).
Honduras players may be saying for days now that they are not traveling to Mexico just to hang out, but it will take much more than just good will to earn them a positive result at the home of the strongest side of the ‘Hexagonal’. They have four points in four games, as many as fourth-placed USA, but they have already played three games at home, and, very importantly, they have lost to Panama, who could be seen as their main rival. They are visiting Panama right after this game in Mexico, so maybe, just maybe, in the back of their mind, they will have that game, which could really make or break their ‘Hexagonal’ campaign.
Mexico vs Honduras: Head-to-head Stats
Mexico are… bosses of their ties with Honduras, at least as hosts, having beaten them ten times in 12 games. The visitors have celebrated just one win in Mexico, in the qualifiers of the previous World Cup finals. The draw (0-0) was back in September (2016).
Mexico vs Honduras: Prediction
It would be a major surprise if Mexico failed to win this game. Their victory pays just 1.25, which gives you an idea how shocking it would be if Honduras managed to leave Mexico having earned even a single point.
Mexico vs Honduras: Tips
Mexico have been effective defensively, but… just barely productive offensively, so, since a simple win of theirs pays just 1.25, and a win of theirs combined with a clean sheet is at only 1.66, I’m going with ‘Mexico and under 2.5 goals’, at 2.65. I can see them score twice, but I’m counting on them to look satisfied after those two goals, keeping in mind that soon after this game they are also hosting the USA.
