Millonarios vs Corinthians
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 1 March 2018
Kick-off: 01:45 CET
Millonarios won the so-called “Torneo Finalización” in Colombia last season, and that’s how they qualified directly for the Copa Libertadores group stage. In the new ongoing season they are just 15th(!), on only five points from as many matches. Last weekend they lost 2-0 at Deportivo Cali, playing with 10 men since the 18th minute. That’s when they went 1-0 down from the penalty spot, and despite fighting bravely in the remainder of the match, they got… further punished with a second goal in added time. It was the second time in just over a week that they lost a player in the first half. They were winning 1-0 at home against Atlético Nacional, but Duque got sent-off just before halftime, and Millonarios simply managed to salvage a point. Other than their on-field problems, the team, the club in general, have been affected by an off-field issue as well. Miguel Ángel Russo, their Argentine coach, has been having health problems recently, getting hospitalized in more than one occasion. The players and the board of directors are backing him, but… remains to be seen if he can actually perform his duties in the long run.
He was one of Corinthians’ best players in their 2-0 triumph over Palmeiras last weekend, in the Paulista championship, but midfielder Rodriguinho is serving a ban from last season’s red card against Racing Club, so coach Fábio Carille cannot count on him. Striker Colin Kazim Richards has to serve a much bigger ban, five matches(!), so he wasn’t even included in Corinthians’ Copa Libertadores list. The Brazil champions surprised many by signing Alex Teixeira from Jiangsu Suning (China Super League side) on a one-year loan, but for some reason they chose not to include him in the Copa Libertadores list. They could have included him even without having reached a definite deal with the Chinese club, but it seems that when it was time to send the list to CONMEBOL, they thought they had few chances to reach a deal with Suning, and didn’t risk including him in the list. Pity for Corinthians, because he would be one of the competition’s stars.

I’m thrilled to see Millonarios be considered that big favourites to win the game, because it makes my top two choices pay better than what I expected.
