Newcastle Falcons vs Bath
Competition: Aviva Premiership Rugby
Date: 06 January 2017
Kick-off: 20:45 CET
Bath’ fourth defeat of the campaign has seen them drop out of the Top three for the first time in a long time as the rest of the competitors in the Premiership start to really find their feet. With a match against Newcastle looming, they will feel they need to make amends and push again for third spot, and punish a mediocre Falcons side.
Newcastle are in eighth spot at the moment, equal on points with Gloucester, 25, who are in ninth below them. Their win record has not been great, having picked up five victories and seven losses, but it is their general performance which has not inspired. They looked like they had a chance to topple another top half team when they just lost to Wasps 34-30 in their last game of last year, but now against a determined Bath side, they will be really stretched – even at home where they have a bit of a fortress.
Bath in the meantime will not be happy by being usurped by Exeter who have almost come from nowhere to be in the top three as there was a time through the season they were in the lower half of the log. Bath’s slip up was not a good one and with a coach like Todd Blackadder at the helm, you can be assured that it will not happen again and that they will come out much more fired up and ready for this game. They are obviously still in touching distance of Exeter, but they will want to stay hot on the Chiefs’ heels and wait for them to slip up so they can once again challenge for second, or even first place.
Newcastle Falcons vs Bath: Head-to-Head Stats
Against the Falcons, Bath can walk into this encounter with a lot of confidence as historically they have dominated the Newcastle team. There have been 37 matches in the Premiership and Bath have won over three quarters of them with 28 victories to Newcastle’s nine.
Newcastle Falcons vs Bath: Prediction
Bath are definitely a better team this year, and they are a better team than Newcastle. Add to that that they are coming off a disappointing loss and you know they will be ready for this match. Newcastle will put up a fight, especially at home, but there are too many game breakers for Bath for them to lose this one.
