OFI Crete vs Panathinaikos
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 9 December 2018
Kick-off: 16:15 CET
OFI Crete came close to winning their second game of the season last weekend, when they visited PAS Giannina. They took the lead in the 55th minute, held it until the 84th, but they got equalized, and had to settle for a point. They are on eight, sitting 14th in the table, right above the relegation line. Coach Nikos Papadopoulos received good news these last days; players who had been missing for some time due to injuries are back, which leaves their coach with more options to choose from. Only two players remain unavailable, right-back Manolis Bolakis and center-forward Christos Aravidis. OFI have won just one Super League game this season, but… what a win that was, over Olympiakos. They may be thinking, “since we beat Olympiakos, we can beat Panathinaikos as well”, but that’s to be proved on the field.
Panathinaikos salvaged a point at Aris last weekend, equalizing in added time from the penalty spot (a pretty cheeky effort by youngster Chatzigiovanis, who chipped the ball “a lo Panenka”). Much earlier in the game, in the first half, the referee had given two penalties to Aris. The hosts wasted the first one, but didn’t miss the second one. The… irony of the matter is that the first penalty call was rather right, but in the second case the referee got it wrong. Right-back Mattias Johansson did touch the ball with his right arm, but it was the very definition of “unintentional”. The ball had found his right leg first. The Swede got injured and had to leave the field later on, and is out this weekend. Italian center-forward Federico Macheda got sent-off in the 89th minute last weekend, and is unavailable. Midweek, Panathinaikos needed an added-time goal to avoid losing (2-2) to minnows OF Ierapetra at home, in a Greece Cup match. They are 5th in the Super League table, on 19 points.
