Olimpia Asuncion vs General Diaz
Competition: Paraguay Apertura
Date: 12 February 2018
Kick-off: 23:00 CET
Olimpia are obliged to… pick up their pieces, after getting eliminated by Junior from the Copa Libertadores. They had won the first leg 1-0 in Asunción, they traveled to Colombia midweek, at halftime they were at 1-1, seemingly in control, they had to concede two goals in the second half to get eliminated, and… that’s exactly what happened. Poor performance, poor-poor performance, a lucky goal scored (there was a deflection), three silly goals conceded, few chances to score more, so… at the end of the day, Olimpia didn’t really deserve something better in Barranquilla. It really leaves you wondering… That was a huge game for them, and they looked almost… gutless, as if it was “just another game”… Last weekend they beat Independiente de Campo Grande 2-1 at Defensores del Chaco, playing with nine reserves. It will be interesting to see who among those who played in Barranquilla will… pay the price for the way below average performance of the team and their elimination.
General Díaz were considered favourites against Deportivo Capiatá last weekend, but all they managed was a 1-1 draw, and that, only because they equalized seconds before added time started. They imposed their own rules on the pitch from the first minute, dominated for over half an hour, but failed to score, and suddenly they found themselves playing second fiddle to Deportivo Capiatá. Just over 15 minutes into the second half, Julio González sent the ball into his own net, putting General Díaz 1-0 down. That goal acted as a wake-up call for them, as they regained control of the match. As previously mentioned, they needed a 90th-minute goal to salvage at least a point, but had other chances earlier. All in all, given how the game went, avoiding defeat was an… ok result for General Díaz.

I expect Olimpia to bounce back. They need to… give their fans something, they need to change the agenda, make people talk less about their huge failure in the Copa Libertadores, and more about starting the Apertura with two wins in as many games.
