Olimpia vs Universidad Concepcion
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 12 March 2019
Kick-off: 23:15 CET
Olimpia’s coach, Daniel Garnero, told reporters after his team’s goalless draw at Godoy Cruz last week that he was very pleased with the team, with their football, and blamed the lack of goals on the bad state of the pitch. Truth is, the stadium in Mendoza doesn’t have the best playing surface in South America, but even so, Olimpia were very-very poor in creating chances. They did spent a lot of time with the ball in their feet, but… what did they do with that? Just passed it around, showing zero creativity, and zero determination to take a risk or two, and push for that goal they – supposedly – wanted. They definitely did a good job defensively though, as Godoy Cruz created only two real chances in 90 minutes. On Saturday, El Decano hosted newly-promoted River Plate in Paraguay’s Apertura, and dropped two points (0-0), a big surprise, given that Olimpia had seven wins and just one draw (no defeat), in their eight previous matches in their championship.
What a game Universidad Concepción and Sporting Cristal offered football fans last week… Patricio Rubio gave the Chilean side the lead seconds before the end of the first half, and in the 51st minute it looked like he was putting the game to bed for Concepción, when he scored again. In eight minutes, Sporting Cristal had equalized(!). Incredibly, Universidad Concepción took a two-goal lead for a second time, but… insanely, Sporting Cristal equalized again, 4-4. The drama wasn’t over, as Rubio scored his fourth goal of the match in added time, giving his team a memorable (a word that in this case feels like an understatement) 5-4 victory. On Saturday, they conceded four more goals (at Palestino), but scored only once, getting destroyed away from home.
