Olympiakos Piraeus vs Asteras Tripolis
Competition: Greece Super League 1
Date: 24 August 2019
Kick-off: 20:30 CET
I doubt even Olympiakos’ most optimistic fans expected that 4-0 over Krasnodar last Tuesday, in the first leg of their Champions League playoffs tie. Just under 80 minutes into the game, the Piraeus side were leading 1-0, looking superior to Krasnodar, keeping a clean sheet rather comfortably, and trying to score a second goal. Come 89’, they were 4-0 up(!), having scored three goals in 11 minutes! Insane things need to happen the coming Tuesday in Russia for them to get eliminated. The question the next three and a half months will be how successful will Olympiakos be in combining Champions League group stage matches, with their Super League 1 games. They definitely have a deeper roster than last season, Pedro Martins, their coach, is not a newbie in Piraeus any more, this is his second season in charge, so… it looks good for them, and even better for their coffers, as qualification for the CL group stage comes with serious-serious money…
Asteras Tripolis finished 11th last season, worrying until the very end about getting relegated. They decided to change things, and I mean… drastically; they hired a 34-year-old coach, Spaniard Borja Jiménez, considered up-and-coming in his country, and right after that, they started signing one Spanish player after another. Believe it or not, they signed a total of eight(!) Spaniards, letting several Greek players of theirs go. Most of the guys who arrived are young, 22, 23, up to 25, and Asteras are not hiding that their hope is to play good football, earn positive results, and make a decent profit next season, selling some of the players they signed this summer, cashing in on what they hope to be a successful season. In other words, Asteras have no problem with being seen by all those Spaniards as a useful “stepping stone” to go somewhere “better” next summer.

Olympiakos Piraeus vs Asteras Tripolis: Prediction
When you are in the middle of huge Champions League matches it may be tough to… change the chip, focus on a home game against a team that almost got relegated last season, but Olympiacos cannot afford to start their Super League 1 campaign the same poor way they did last year.
Olympiakos Piraeus vs Asteras Tripolis: Betting Tips
Given that a simple Olympiakos win pays too little, just over 1.20, I would try coming it with “under 3.5 goals”, at 1.83. They have kept a clean sheet in five CL matches this summer, against Viktoria Plzen, Istanbul Basaksehir and Krasnodar. “Olympiacos and under 2.5 goals” pays 3.00.
