Olympiakos vs Platanias
Competition: Greece Cup
Date: 10 January 2018
Kick-off: 14:00 CET
A Marko Marin goal in the 54th minute simplified things for Olympiakos on Sunday, paving the way for the Super League leaders’ 3-0 win at AEL Larissa, which pushed them back to the top of the table. Both PAOK and AEK had won on Saturday and had left Olympiakos two points behind, but the champions’ solid performance in Larissa allowed them to stay at the top for another weekend. Olympiakos have a new coach, Oscar Garcia, and what is probably even more important is that they have a new/old player. Kevin Mirallas is back, six years after leaving Greece to play for Everton. He had been fantastic for Olympiakos the two seasons he spent there, and there is no doubt his return to the club is giving them a H U G E boost in their fight to retain the title.
Platanias gave an admirable fight at Panathinaikos on Sunday, they managed to stay at 0-0 until the 72nd minute, but a goal from the penalty spot put them 1-0 down. Soon after that, they were left with 10 men, as Dikamona saw a second yellow card. If that weren’t enough, the referee gave another penalty to Panathinaikos in added time. That’s how Platanias lost 2-0, their 13th consecutive defeat, I repeat, 13th(!!), Super League and Cup combined. If you check their stats and you see a 3-0 win over Iraklis on November 30, don’t fall for that, the game never took place, Platanias won on paper only because Iraklis were ineligible to play in the Cup. The visitors are sitting last in the table of the Super League, on just six points from 16 matches.
