Olympiakos vs Xanthi
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 14 April 2019
Kick-off: 18:00 CET
Olympiakos had been fantastic for weeks before losing 3-1 at PAOK in February, have been awesome ever since, under different circumstances they would be much closer to the top of the table, but they were/are… unlucky to compete this season against a PAOK side that look… destined to bring their club their first championship title in 34 years. Last weekend, Olympiakos destroyed Panetolikos 0-5 in Agrinio, their sixth Super League win in a row, leaving aside their game at Panathinaikos, which was abandoned in the 71st minute, with Olympiakos leading 0-1. Furthermore, the Piraeus side have scored either four or five goals in most of those recent victories, not just winning, but really… dominating on the field. Even that Cup match they lost to Lamia, was a… crazy result, a game in which Olympiakos dominated from start to finish, but missed all their numerous chances, while Lamia scored thanks to their only attempt on target in 90 minutes. Bottom line, Olympiakos are doing great, and have everything needed to beat Xanthi as well.
Xanthi are in trouble; after losing three matches in a row, they are stuck on 29 points, one more than 12th-placed Asteras Tripolis, and three more than 13th-placed PAS Giannina, the team that if the season were over today, would be going through playoffs to avoid relegation. Facing Olympiakos in Piraeus, it feels like Xanthi’s chances of getting… unstuck in the table are close to zero. Next weekend they will be hosting Apollon, in a golden chance to earn all three points. On the last day of the season, they will be visiting Aris, in yet another match in which they will be underdogs, like this weekend. On another note, Xanthi issued a public statement denying that their coach, Milan Rastavac, will be moving to Atromitos after the end of the season.
