Pakhtakor Tashkent vs Al Quwa Al Jawiya
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 12 February 2019
Kick-off: 11:00 CET
Pakhtakor Tashkent are the runners-up of the last Uzbekistan championship edition, earning a ticket to the second qualifying round of the AFC Champions League. This is actually their 15th appearance in the competition. Out of all teams participating in the AFC CL this season, even those already guaranteed a spot in the group stage, only Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal have as many appearances in Asia’s biggest competition at club level, and no one has more than them. Impressive. Last year, things didn’t go well for them, as they got eliminated very early, losing to Al Gharafa 2-1 in the qualifiers. Should be mentioned that their last official match was on November 30. Last week they faced Swedish side Örebro in a friendly match, and drew 2-2.
Al Quwa Al Jawiya are back to the Champions League for the first time after 11 whole years. This is their fourth appearance. They are the runners-up of the 2017-2018 Iraq Premier League. Back in 2008, eight points didn’t prove enough to help push them through the group stage. They were definitely decent, winning twice, drawing twice, and losing twice. Unlike Pakhtakor, they played two official matches the last two weeks, after the restart of the season in Iraq. They beat Al Bahri away from home, and a week ago they drew 1-1 with Naft Al-Wasat. Given that this is a single knock-out match and no return leg exists, the Iraqi side will really need to outdo themselves to win and be in the play-offs next week.
