Pakhtakor vs Al Ahli Jeddah
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 12 March 2019
Kick-off: 14:00 CET
Kudos to Pakhtakor for doing a very good job defensively last week in Iran against Persepolis. Would that have been enough to earn them a point (1-1) if the first assistant referee hadn’t missed a c-l-e-a-r offside in the 5th minute, when Pakhtakor took the lead? Who knows?… One thing is for sure, the assistant referee is inexcusable. It was one of those easy offside cases that even a 15-year-old could have seen. Persepolis’ players claimed there was foul before the offside, but no matter what, Pakhtakor’s goal shouldn’t have counted. The fact that it was their only dangerous visit to Persepolis’ box in 90 minutes, makes me doubt they really-really deserved that point they earned, despite the fact, I repeat, that they did a very good job defensively. The new championship in Uzbekistan hasn’t started yet, so no game for them last weekend.
Al Ahli were lucky to be given that penalty in the 31st minute last week, when they hosted Al Sadd. It was the… softest possible penalty they could have earned, no defender’s hands on the attacker, hardly any body contact, but the referee thought it was so clear that he didn’t hesitate for a moment(…). It was just what Al Ahli needed to take the lead and change the balance on the pitch, in what was a rather 50-50 game. Their second goal in 76th minute came from what was probably their only real chance after 1-0 (they had missed a good one earlier, before taking the lead). Omar Al Somah was the scorer of both goals, and he did it again on Friday, when Al Ahli visited Al Quadisiya. He scored the winner in added time (1-2).
