Palmeiras vs Atletico Goianiense
Competition: Brazilian Serie A
Date: 22 June 2017
Kick-off: 02:00 CET
Cuca was a happy man after seeing his Palmeiras beat Bahia 4-2 in Salvador. He said justice was finally made. The Palmeiras coach feels his team deserved much better results this last month based on how well they had been playing, but somehow they didn’t score as much as they deserved. At Bahia, they… scored more than enough. Those three points they earned in Salvador were the first ones away from home this season, in their fifth attempt. Before that, they had four losses in the championship (without even scoring!), and two more (always on the road) in the Copa Libertadores and the Copa do Brasil. Center-forward Willian, the guy who scored their fourth goal in Salvador, received his third yellow card in the season and is unavailable.
Atletico Goianiense had beaten Ponte Preta and Avai in their previous two home games before hosting Atletico Paranaense, but I backed the visitors not to lose, and they actually ended up beating Atletico Goianiense 1-0, a very disappointing result for the hosts. It’s one thing to lose on the road to a team higher than you in the table, but a home loss to a team that feature lower than you, is hard to swallow, no matter if that team are Atletico Paranaense (in the Copa Libertadores round of 16, let’s not forget, despite their bad start in the Serie A season).
Palmeiras vs Atletico Goianiense: Head-to-head Stats
This is the first time in four years that Palmeiras get to host Atletico Goianiense, since they spent the last three seasons in different categories. In 2013, Palmeiras won 1-0, in a Serie B game.
Palmeiras vs Atletico Goianiense: Prediction
Palmeiras have an unbelievable record at home, they have won 21 of their last 27 games as hosts, with the other six games ending in a draw! Their last defeat at home was almost a year ago, in July 2016, to Atletico Mineiro. Plus, this last year, only twice they failed to score as hosts, statistics that add up to the fact that they just beat a very good Bahia side away from home. Palmeiras should win this one.
Palmeiras vs Atletico Goianiense: Tips
A simple Palmeiras win pays just 1.25. Having just played an awesome game (offensively), and hosting the team with the second worst defense in the championship, for something much better than 1.25 I’m backing Palmeiras to score three or more goals. This pays 2.20.
