Palmeiras vs Atletico Mineiro
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 22 July 2018
Kick-off: 21:00 CET
Palmeiras faced Santos midweek at Pacaembu, I expected them to win, and having seen how the game went, I do feel they should have. There was a period in the first half after they took the lead that Santos were the better team on the pitch, but all in all, Palmeiras missed more and bigger chances, some of them incredible ones, and should have gotten something better than that 1-1 draw. They are 7th in the table, on 20 points from 13 matches. After the game at Pacaembu, coach and players agreed that the draw felt… not enough. They have no one to blame but themselves, as, I repeat, they missed incredible chances to score more than once, against a team that looked super vulnerable defensively. Argentinian center-back Nico Freire, newly-signed, has his papers ready, and could make his debut. Colombian striker Miguel Borja is still recovering after his surgery, earlier this month.
Atlético Mineiro were… cornered by Gremio midweek, lost 2-0 in Porto Alegre, and if they want to be honest with themselves, they should be relieved to have lost “only” 2-0. They created zero chances to score, while Gremio pushed and pushed and pushed, even with the score at 2-0, early in the second half. Atlético’s newly-signed players were… invisible, but it would be unfair to blame them for the overall poor, very-very poor, performance of the team. Plus, they were unlucky to find opposite them a really rejuvenated Gremio side, who played their best game in a long time (they had been below average for weeks before the World Cup finals break). Atlético are now third in the table, on 23 points from 13 matches.
