Panathinaikos vs AEK Athens
Competition: Greek Super League
Date: 24 May 2017
Kick-off: 19:30 CET
Panathinaikos are disappointed, and it’s easy to understand why. They were beating PAOK 1-0, and suddenly… just like that, a can of beer (that injured PAOK coach Vladan Ivic) practically ended their season. It should be taken for granted that all three points for the abandoned game will go to PAOK, Panathinaikos could see more points deducted, and if that wasn’t enough, Marcus Berg acted anything but professional and earned himself a three-match ban for… quarreling with a PAOK player. The fact that he was wearing the armband of the captain, raised the suspension to four matches, Panathinaikos appealed, they were denied, so… the playoffs are over for the Swedish striker. Against AEK, they lost 1-0, conceding five minutes from time. Disappointment, plus, missing players (right-back Ousmane Coulibaly, attacking midfielder Lucas Villafanez, center-back Rasmus Thelander, obviously Berg), have left Panathinaikos very-very hurt.
Lazaros Christodoulopoulos scored a golden goal for AEK in the 85th minute of their home game against Panathinaikos, to keep them alive in the fight for the top spot in the playoffs. Typically they are first, a point above PAOK, but in reality the Thessaloniki team are top, since they will get the three points for their abandoned game at Panathinaikos. Goalkeeper Barkas is under therapy for his injured hand, because of which he missed the game against Panathinaikos on Sunday. Striker Aravidis continues training on his own, still unable to shake off his latest injury. AEK are counting on Panathinaikos’ disappointment and overall… lack of hope, to help them grab an all too precious away win. The fact that they still have to play against PAOK in Athens, is what gives AEK real reason to hope that they will finish first in the playoffs.
Panathinaikos vs AEK Athens: Head-to-head Stats
Three wins for Panathinaikos and two draws in their last five games with the ‘Greens’ as hosts.
Panathinaikos vs AEK Athens: Prediction
Panathinaikos are hurt, but, for some reason, in this specific game, I expect them to show… well-meant egoism, play for themselves, for their pride, and win the game, maybe to show that if it weren’t for that can of beer, now they would be the top favorite to win this mini league.
Panathinaikos vs AEK Athens: Tips
A Panathinaikos win pays 2.62. Despite AEK’s win on Sunday, they didn’t play like the team that impressed in the second half of the regular season, only in the first half against PAOK on the first day of the playoffs they were really good, so I’m backing Panathinaikos to win, despite their… broken wings and numerous problems.
