Panathinaikos vs AEL Larissa
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 27 January 2019
Kick-off: 18:00 CET
Until late Friday night, Panathinaikos were seriously considering filing a case that would keep them alive in the Cup, despite having gotten eliminated by Lamia on the pitch. Panathinaikos won 1-0, they had lost 1-0 in Lamia in the first leg, the tie went to penalties, and there, the Greens lost. A refereeing mistake that had to do with the revised rules of the game, concerning the fourth substitution that teams are now allowed to make if a Cup tie goes to extra-time (the referee of this specific match didn’t allow the fourth substitution, obviously not knowing the new rule!!!), opened a window for Panathinaikos. No matter what, they lost on the field, to a team that played in the return leg without several key men. Captain Dimitris Kourbelis had to run some tests the day after the match, to make sure he hadn’t damaged his knee (he just returned from injury). At Panathinaikos they were relieved to see that he is ok. They are 5th in the Super League table, on 23 points.
“Sometimes, God falls asleep”. That’s something people in Greece use to say when they have to… explain inexplicable things, things that make zero sense. That’s how AEL Larissa “explained” their elimination in the Cup, after losing 5-3 to Asteras Tripolis midweek, away from home (they issued a public statement). They had won 3-2 in the first leg, they were at 3-3 in the 75th minute of the return match, but they conceded twice more, and got kicked out of the competition. In the Super League, last weekend, they got stuck to a 0-0 draw at home with Aris. They are on 19 points, 9th in the table, but just four points behind 5th-placed Panathinaikos, so a great result in this match would totally change the look of the table, at least in relation to where these two teams stand.

Panathinaikos beat Larissa three times in 2017, twice in the Super League and once in the Cup. Before that, they hadn’t hosted them since 2010 (0-0).
Panathinaikos vs AEL Larissa: Prediction
Panathinaikos’ confidence is… shattered. It’s normal, when you have a team full of young players, who have never carried on their shoulders before the responsibility of delivering for a big club. I consider Larissa… opportunistic enough to earn something from this match, against a vulnerable, mentally, opponent.
Panathinaikos vs AEL Larissa: Betting Tips
Larissa’s double chance is at 2.65(!). Their 1.5 handicap pays just 1.50, not particularly tempting.
