Panathinaikos vs Atromitos
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 16 December 2018
Kick-off: 18:00 CET
Panathinaikos have been rightly praised since the start of the season for their football, their approach in every game, their results. Be reminded, they started the season carrying a -6 from last year, they wiped that out right away, they kept winning, were one of the last teams to stay undefeated (until they finally lost at PAOK), but recently they have been showing signs of… slowing down. Two weeks ago, they needed an added-time penalty to salvage a point at Aris. Right after that, they needed another added-time goal to avoid losing at home to a team from a lower division, in a Cup match. Last but not least, last weekend they got totally outplayed by OFI in Crete, losing 3-1. Coach Giorgos Donis knows he has many young players at his disposal, guys who are not used to playing at this level, wearing such a “heavy” jersey. He looks perfect for the job, experienced, knowledgeable, but also patient, and conscious of the “special conditions” at Panathinaikos, both on and off the field. The Greens are 5th in the table, on 19 points.
A week after playing their worst game of the season, at Apollon Smyrnis, a disgraceful 1-1, Atromitos went back to playing like… Atromitos last weekend, hosting Aris. Early lead, second goal in the 59th minute, things looked… quiet until the 89th, when Aris made it 2-1. Final score, 4-2(!!), with Atromitos restoring their two-goal lead (3-1), Aris scoring again (3-2), and Atromitos, yes, pushing the gap back to two goals (4-2). Four goals scored in about five minutes. Efthymis Koulouris scored two of Atromitos’ four goals, is now on 11, leading in the table of scorers, three ahead of PAOK’s Aleksandar Prijovic. The… irony of the matter is that Koulouris himself “belongs” to PAOK, is playing at Atromitos on loan. The Peristeri side took perfect advantage of Olympiakos’ draw at Xanthi, and returned to the second spot of the table, the one they had… given away with that ridiculous 1-1 draw at Apollon a week earlier. They are seven points behind leaders PAOK.

Five Panathinaikos wins and a draw in the last six games between these two with the Greens as hosts. Interestingly, Atromitos failed to score in all six matches(!).
Panathinaikos vs Atromitos: Prediction
The hosts are considered favorites to win the game, but I trust Atromitos to earn at least a draw, and I won’t be surprised if they win.
