Panetolikos vs Veria
Competition: Greek Super League
Date: 9 April 2017
Kick-off: 18:00 CET
Panetolikos have been below average for weeks now, and if it weren’t for that home win against Levadiakos more than a month ago, now they’d be fighting for a spot in next season’s Super League, instead of… sitting back and scoring just one goal in their last four games, none of which was against a super strong rival (excluding maybe Xanthi on Wednesday, who cannot be called ‘super’ strong, but are definitely strong). Migas, Koutromanos, but more importantly Marcos Paulo, are dealing with injuries and could miss this game, further weakening the hosts’ defensive line and midfield. The only thing Panetolikos have to fight for in this game, is their honour. It remains to be seen if they will do something about it, or they’ll act like Kerkyra and Giannina, and allow Veria to snatch a ‘surprise’ win.
Up until three games ago, Veria had 11 goals in 24 Super League games this season. In their last three games they have scored eight(!) times, getting two ‘incredible’ wins at home against Kerkyra (4-0) and Giannina (3-0). It’s obvious that Veria are no longer Veria but… Barcelona (they kind of share the same colours). This, though, is an away game, and away from home they have ten losses in 13 games this season, one win alone, back in September, and two draws. If this game was taking place in… February, or January, no one would consider betting on Veria. Given though that… ‘weird’ things happen in Greece in the last games every season, another Veria… ‘miracle’ shouldn’t be ruled out, not even away from home. What’s ironic in Veria’s case, just like in Iraklis’ case, is that even if they perform a huge miracle and finish 14th, above the relegation line, both of them could still get relegated, because of their endless financial troubles.
Panetolikos vs Veria: Head-to-head Stats
One win for Panetolikos and two draws in their last three games in Agrinio. Veria have scored only once in these last three games.
Panetolikos vs Veria: Prediction
To predict how this game will go, you need to… have a bug in Panetolikos’ locker room, and know if they are determined to… bother winning this game, or not. Veria are dying to win, but away from home they have been pitiful the whole season. Will their huge motive be enough to push them to a rare away win? I doubt, but then again, Panetolikos have been so below average for weeks now, that nothing should be ruled out. All in all, I wouldn’t touch this game.
Panetolikos vs Veria: Tips
If you want to… join the craziness of the Super League’s last weeks, go for ‘draw or Veria’ and hope that Panetolikos will look bored, indifferent, unwilling to put their legs in the fire, at a stage of the season that they have no reason to care about points.
