Panionios vs AEK Athens
Competition: Greek Super League
Date: 31 May 2017
Kick-off: 19:30 CET
Panionios hope to get a better result than what Panathinaikos will get at PAOK, so as to finish third in the playoffs, and make their vacation last a little longer, since they will enter the Europa League qualifiers at a later stage. No matter what, this has been a successful season for them, and even if they finish last in the playoffs, no one will really blame them, if not for any other reason, then just for the simple fact that their budget is way-way-way lower than that of the other three participants in the playoffs.
AEK are the only team that can snatch the top spot from PAOK, but for that they need a little… help from Panathinaikos. After beating PAOK 1-0 on Sunday, they have eight points, two less than the Thessaloniki side. If PAOK draw to Panathinaikos and AEK beat Panionios, AEK finish first, because they have beaten PAOK twice in the playoffs. They will be without Czech center-forward Tomas Pekhart who got injured towards the end of their last game. Right winger Patito Rodriguez is also out, but Bosnian center-back Ognjen Vranjes is back, after missing the last game due to suspension.
Panionios vs AEK Athens: Head-to-head Stats
Two of the last three games between these two with Panionios as hosts have ended in a draw, the hosts won the other game, and none of the three had more than two goals.
Panionios vs AEK Athens: Prediction
AEK are considered clear favorites to win the game, but personally I’m backing the hosts not to lose. They may be sitting last in the table, but they do have a motive to win, a big one actually, because if they finish higher than Panathinaikos they will have the ‘luxury’ to make their summer vacation last longer, a motive that may be even bigger than any bonus in the form of money.
Panionios vs AEK Athens: Tips
‘Panionios or draw’ pays 1.90, and I prefer it to the 1.80 that AEK’s win is at. Especially if PAOK score first at home against Panathinaikos, in the game that will be played simultaneously, AEK will know that their fight against Panionios will be kind of… futile. At any case, Panionios have been better than what their results in the playoffs suggest, while exactly the opposite can be written about AEK, who may have nine points, but in most of those 450 minutes in the five last games they have looked very poor.
