Panionios vs Panathinaikos: Preview
Panionios have already reached their target for this season, they finished in the top five, they secured their presence in next season’s Europa League, good times for the club, and what they want now is to finish as high possible, knowing that earning a ticket to the Champions League qualifiers is really difficult, but still, the higher they finish in the playoffs, the later they will start next season in Europa League’s qualifiers. Panionios finished the regular season badly, earning just one point in their last four matches. It remains to be seen if they have really given… all they had, or if the two-week break since their last game recharged their batteries and there is more in them left, to return to wins. Defensive midfielder Korbos got injured just before the end of the regular season, there were fears his injury was serious, but turned out it wasn’t that much, and he could actually reappear against Panathinaikos, which would be great for coach Milojevic, since Korbos was a regular throughout the season.
Unlike Panionios who will be ok even with finishing last in the playoffs, Panathinaikos have a much bigger target, to finish top, and try their luck in next season’s Champions League qualifiers. They finished the season with eight wins in their last 11 matches, only two defeats, both to PAOK in Thessaloniki, 3-0 in the championship, and, the one that hurt the most, 4-0 in the return leg of their Cup semifinal, a shocking result for the ‘Greens’, who had beaten PAOK 2-0 in Athens in the first leg. Central midfielder Robin Lod got injured in training, and he could miss all playoff games, not just this one. Center-back Rasmus Thelander has been sidelined since mid April, he spent the last days training on his own, and most probably he won’t play in this game either.
Panionios vs Panathinaikos: Head-to-head Stats
Panathinaikos have beaten Panionios just once the last six times they’ve visited them, and that was back in 2012. Panionios have won two games, and three have ended in a draw.
Panionios vs Panathinaikos: Prediction
Panionios finished the regular season very badly, more like… horribly, giving the impression that… they felt their job is done for this year. Panathinaikos suffered a massive defeat at PAOK in the Cup semis, a result that still hurts them. No matter what, there is no doubt Panathinaikos are a better team, and one way or another, I expect them to win.
Panionios vs Panathinaikos: Tips
A Panathinaikos win pays 2.00, which I find fair, given how bad Panionios were the last month of the regular season. For more than that, I’d go for a Panathinaikos win in an under 2.5 goals game, which pays 3.60. Obviously there is a much bigger risk involved, but Panionios looked very weak offensively in their last games, I don’t expect them to score, and Panathinaikos should be more than happy with an 1-0 lead at halftime, 2-0, maybe, half way through the second half.
