Panionios vs Xanthi
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 17 March 2019
Kick-off: 18:30 CET
Panionios are… dying to see this season come to an end. Last weekend they got humiliated at Panetolikos (5-0), a week after losing 3-0 at Atromitos as well. They sit 12th in the table, on 26 points, right above PAS Giannina, the team that if the season were over today, would have to go through playoffs to avoid relegation. More bad news for them is that Matic Kotnik, their Slovenian goalkeeper, has been sidelined and will stay out for at least two weeks. Plus, his compatriot left-back Milan Kocic is unavailable, serving a one-match ban. Earlier this past week, a group of fans “visited” the team, and talked to the players. Things stayed… civilized, the fans expressed their… feelings, their disappointment, but assured the team they are behind them, as they need to pick up some more points until the end of the season to avoid the… unthinkable (think about the “R-word” all teams fear when featuring very low in the table).
Xanthi are visiting Panionios with several problems; defensive midfielder Pablo de Lucas, winger Vasilis Fasidis, and centre-forward Matías Castro, all three are injured, unavailable. Plus, attacking midfielder Petar Djurickovic and central midfielder Khassa Camara are serving a ban. That’s five players not at Milan Rastavac’s disposal, making his… life even tougher. Xanthi drew with Asteras Tripolis at home last weekend, their fifth draw in their last six matches. What’s even more impressive is that they have scored just one goal in their last eight(!) games. On the other hand, they have conceded just three in the same eight outings of theirs. They sit 8th in the table, in what has been a pretty much… wasted season for them. The only positive is that they were… spared PAS Giannina’s fate, another team that started the season with high hopes, only to be threatened with relegation 5-6 game weeks before the end.

Panionios vs Xanthi: Prediction
Xanthi may have been a disappointment since the middle of November, but you can’t overlook the fact that they know how to… destroy a game, keep it to as few goals as possible, so as to avoid defeat. Their double chance pays more than Panionios’ win, so…
