PAOK vs AEL Larissa
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 9 December 2018
Kick-off: 18:30 CET
PAOK were rather lucky to beat Lamia last weekend, away from home. Early in the game, the referee was a few meters away from Vieirinha when PAOK’s captain acted like a… goalkeeper and “blocked” the ball with his hand inside his box. He had his back turned at the Lamia player who had attempted the cross, he didn’t know where the ball was, but still, with his hand raised, he was asking for trouble, and the referee signaled “play on”. Later in the first half, PAOK needed their goalkeeper Paschalakis and his left post to keep their clean sheet. The Super League leaders had just a few real chances in 90 minutes, and thankfully for them, Varela scored in the 55th minute. The – very bad – referee sent Cañas off a while later, for no apparent reason, leaving PAOK with 10 men. The Thessaloniki side avoided further… scares, and left Lamia with all three points. El Kaddouri told reporters the other day that he prefers his team to play poorly but win, rather than play well and lose, but truth is PAOK have been doing just the… bare minimum for weeks now, to keep winning. They are leading in the championship, 11 wins and a draw (no defeat) is admirable, no doubt, but the periods of really good football in their games are few and rather short.
AEL Larissa looked like… Manchester City last weekend, beating Panionios 4-2 at home. Truth is, things were made somewhat easier for them in the 39th minute, when the visitors lost a player to a red card. AEL were drawing 1-1 at that point, took the lead for the second time in the 53rd minute, and 11 later they were 4-1(!) up. They are 10th in the table, on 14 points, having lost just one of their last five matches.
