PAS Giannina vs Asteras Tripolis
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 7 January 2018
Kick-off: 16:15 CET
PAS Giannina fans are still pinching themselves to believe that one of their guys signed at Arsenal, Arsenal, took a photo next to Arsene Wenger, posed for photographers wearing an Arsenal jersey. Defender Kostas Mavropanos turned 20 just last month, and was almost as surprised as Giannina’s fans, as the club president made sure to keep the negotiations with Arsenal a secret until the last moment. The young defender will most probably spend the next months at Werder Bremen, on loan, but the fact that Giannina sold a player to Arsenal for a reported fee of two million euros is something that is nothing less than… historic at PAS. They are sitting 10th in the table, not having won a game since October 28, despite the fact that they have the league’s top scorer, Spaniard Pedro Conde. He alone, is just not enough…
Asteras Tripolis looked set to finish 2017 on a high, they had six wins in a row conceding just one goal, in a 3-1 win at Apollon Smyrnis, but in their last two games they… kind of dropped the ball. Goalless draw against Panetolikos at home, a poor result, and right after that, 1-0 defeat at home to Atromitos in the Cup. They are visiting Atromitos in a few days, they still have the chance to turn things around in the return leg, but beating this season’s Atromitos away from home feels… almost mission impossible. Asteras are sitting 6th in the Super League table, level on points with 5th-placed Panionios. Only four teams will earn European tickets through the championship, but if the Cup winner is a top-4 team, then even the 5th in the final table will get a UEFA Europa League ticket.
