Penarol vs Atletico Tucuman
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 5 April 2018
Kick-off: 00:15 CET
Three weeks ago, when Peñarol visited The Strongest in La Paz, Bolivia, I expected the Uruguayan giants to lose, without scoring. They lost 1-0, their first defeat in 2018, in seven matches. Their second defeat came last Saturday, at Torque, a super unexpected one. They missed a huge chance to leapfrog leaders Nacional in the table of Uruguay’s championship, staying two points behind them. It was a really disappointing performance, second in a row. Four days earlier they had drawn 1-1 at home to Danubio, despite the fact that their visitors were reduced to 10 men early in the second half, and Peñarol took the lead soon after that. Not even with 11 vs 10 did they manage to win the game. The importance of this match against Atlético Tucumán is made all too obvious reading this: for the first time in 2018, in 11 official matches, the players were informed that they would gather at a hotel the afternoon before the game, spend the night there, as well as the morning of the match day, so as to… minimize distractions, focus on this clash as much as possible.
Atlético Tucumán were considered favourites to beat Libertad three weeks ago, but I backed the Asunción side back then to earn at least a draw, and actually they did even better, winning the game 2-0. Atlético have already lost a game, and, at home, which puts them in an even tougher spot than that of Peñarol. On Saturday they beat Independiente 2-0 in Avellaneda, away from home, scoring the second goal while playing with 10 men(!). It was their first win in six games. They are 13th in Argentina’s Superliga, close to the positions that give Copa Sudamericana tickets for next season. Striker Mauricio Affonso will be on the spotlight in this game, as he moved to Tucumán from Peñarol right after the end of last season. Actually, when Tucumán visited Montevideo last year, in the Copa Libertadores group stage, Affonso was the one who scored the winner for the Uruguayans.

Atlético Tucumán’s double chance is at 2.10, much better than Peñarol’s win alone, and that’s my only tip, expecting the Argentines to leave Montevideo undefeated.
