Persepolis vs Lekhwiya
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 23 May 2017
Kick-off: 17:00 CET
Two weeks ago I backed Persepolis to beat Al Wahda in a game that would have at least three goals. They won 4-2, sealing their qualification for the last 16. The championship in Iran had just ended, Persepolis won the title, and the game against Al Wahda is the last they’ve played, since they had no domestic obligations ever since. Important detail! The game is being held behind closed doors, the vast Azadi Stadium in Tehran will be empty, because Persepolis fans have repeatedly… played with fire, and the club finally got burnt, receiving an one-match without spectators ban by the AFC. Hopefully the Persepolis fans will learn their lesson and avoid any idiotic behavior in the future.
Lekhwiya and over 3.5 goals in their game against Al Fateh two weeks ago paid a very tempting 4.25, I suggested it, and it came good, with the Qatari side winning 4-1. Four days later, Lekhwiya lost 3-1 to Al Rayyan, in the semifinal of the Emir Cup, a defeat that didn’t spoil the mood at the club too-too much, since they had already on the championship title, and qualified for the last 16 of the AFC Champions League. That 3-1 to Al Rayyan was the first game after eight consecutive matches that Lekhwiya scored ‘just’ one goal, and not two or more. They had ten days to prepare for this game in Tehran, they don’t have to worry about Persepolis fans making their life even more difficult at the Azadi Stadium since it will be empty, so it looks good for the visitors, they have a rather great opportunity to get a positive result in Iran.
Persepolis vs Lekhwiya: Head-to-head Stats
Persepolis have hosted Lekhwiya once before, two years ago, in the group stage of the AFC Champions League, and they beat them 3-0.
Persepolis vs Lekhwiya: Prediction
Persepolis have not lost at home since April 28, wait, wait for it, 2016, meaning, in over a year. Ever since then, they have won 14 and drawn five games as hosts. Even before that defeat to Naft Tehran, they had gone undefeated for another 11 matches, so that’s one loss at home in 20 months. With these numbers, it’s almost impossible to predict a defeat of theirs in this game, no matter if Lekhwiya have an almost equally impressive record away from home. All in all, I’m leaving winners and losers aside, and I’m focusing on goals, expecting these two very attack-minded teams to produce a game that will have at least three goals.
Persepolis vs Lekhwiya: Tips
Over 2.5 goals pays 1.95, and is my tip to almost double your money.
