Platanias vs AEK Athens
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 15 April 2018
Kick-off: 18:30 CET
How did Platanias spend the last two weeks that there were no games in the super League? Releasing players, lightening up their budget, getting in touch with players to whom they owe money, hoping to convince them not to make a… huge fuss about it, and training with several youngsters. Platanias’ coach didn’t hide that in the last four games of the season he is going to give lots of game time to young guys, an… investment in Platanias’ future. They are already relegated, so the least they can do is seize the opportunity to help youngsters earn precious Super League experience. Platanias have lost six games in a row, by a total score of 1-17(!).
AEK consider themselves champions, they are eight points clear off PAOK, and there are four game weeks left, meaning that this or next weekend they could secure the championship title even mathematically. Put an asterisk at the end of all that; on Wednesday, PAOK’s appeal was discussed, about the game they lost to AEK in papers. Quick reminder, PAOK scored a totally legitimate goal in the 89th minute (1-0), minutes later the referee and his assistant changed their mind(!!!) about a passive offside, causing chaos on the pitch, resulting in AEK leaving it, and not returning. AEK won the game in papers, three points were deducted from PAOK, but the Thessaloniki club appealed, and on Wednesday, they presented footage showing the referee asking AEK players to return to the pitch, something they rejected. PAOK have been claiming since day one that the game did not end because of AEK’s refusal to return to the pitch. The decision is expected on Monday. It’s a far cry, but if, IF AEK lose the case after all, the championship title will be left wide open. Aside all these, AEK are hosting AEL Larissa on Wednesday, needing to overcome a 2-1 deficit from the first leg. It’s a Cup semifinal, and the winner will play against PAOK in the final.
