Platanias vs AEK Athens
Competition: Greek Super League
Date: 6 April 2017
Kick-off: 18:30 CET
If in the beginning of the season someone had told the people of Platanias that four games before the end of the regular season they would be hosting AEK in a ‘derby’ that could see them climb to the top-five, most probably they would have treated that ‘someone’ as a lunatic. And yet, here we are, with Platanias just two points behind fifth-placed AEK, hosting them, and having an ‘es golden as it gets’ chance to boost their chances of a top-five finish. Last weekend, Platanias came close to performing a small football miracle at Olympiakos, they were 0-1 up at half-time, but the pressure was too much for them in the second half, and ended up losing the game 2-1. Giakoumakis, their top goalscorer, has been dealing with an injury for some days now, yesterday and the day before that he seemed to be training more or less normally, but according to reports he is not 100% fit, and he could be left on the bench, and only play in the second half. Depends on how willing coach Paraschos will be to risk him.
Everyone at AEK agrees that their 2-3 home loss to Panathinaikos last weekend was a step backwards, but things for them are so tight that they simply cannot afford to stick to that loss too long. AEK are sitting fifth in the table, but Platanias are just two points behind them, same as Xanthi, which means that Manolo Jimenez and his players don’t have the… luxury to drop the ball again, the way they did against Panathinaikos. Important defender Didac Vila is unavailable because he has reached the cards limit, and midfielder Galanopoulos is doubtful, not having trained properly the last days due to an injury. It will be really interesting to see how AEK will react to their loss to Panathinaikos, and to the fact that despite stepping on it in the Super League for over two months now, they are STILL to secure a spot in the play-offs, something that could take its toll on them.
Platanias vs AEK Athens: Head-to-head Stats
Last time AEK visited Platanias in the Super League, they beat them 3-0. Actually, AEK have beaten Platanias with the exact same score in four of their last five encounters, regardless of where the games were played. The only time Platanias managed to avoid defeat was earlier this season, at home, in a Cup game, which ended in a goalless draw.
Platanias vs AEK Athens: Prediction
Platanias are super enthusiastic and it’s great for them to know that they have nothing really to lose but so much to gain. Even so, AEK are without doubt a much better team, and under different circumstances I wouldn’t think twice before backing them to win. I have my doubts about how they will look psychologically, after their loss last weekend. Everything considered though, deep down, I expect the best team to prevail, and the best team in this case is definitely AEK.
Platanias vs AEK Athens: Tips
That 1.95 AEK’s win pays is not exactly dreamy, but it’s good enough. Taking a risk, I’m also going with over 2.5 goals, at 2.60.
