Platanias vs Olympiakos
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 11 March 2018
Kick-off: 14:00 CET
Platanias were considered slight favourites to beat Lamia at home last weekend, but I didn’t trust them one single bit. They ended up losing the game 1-2. They didn’t need that defeat to realize how… doomed they are, but both teams that were right above them in the table earned points, so Platanias, right now, hope for a mini miracle to avoid relegation. Their chances of playing Super League football next season, at this point, are just mathematical, not realistic. On top of everything else, they have three players missing, making their mission against Olympiakos, even this deeply troubled Olympiakos, close to “impossible”.
“Some players play for themselves, not for the team”. That’s exactly what Olympiakos were “missing”, their coach turning against some of the players, accusing them for that 1-1 at home last weekend against Panathinaikos. Olympiakos’ win was paying super little, they were considered practically sure winners, but I backed Panathinaikos to earn a draw, their double chance was at 3.00, and I was thrilled to see Olympiakos concede minutes before the end of the game from the penalty spot, same way they had taken the lead earlier in the second half. If you check the table on some website and you see Olympiakos on 50 points, that’s wrong. On Saturday, they did get all three points for their game against PAOK in Thessaloniki, the one that never took place, but they have a -3 hanging above their head. They have appealed, waiting for a final decision. Bottom line, they are NOT second in the table, they are on 47 points, five behind PAOK, seven behind leaders AEK.
