PSV vs Rostov
Competition: UEFA Champions League
Date: 06 December 2016
Kick-off: 20:45 CET
There is nothing left for either of these teams to play for as PSV currently sit bottom of Group D, while Rostov are in third above them while the other two teams have already qualified. However, there is a chance for PSV to leap-frog Rostov into a potential Europa League position.
Group D’s qualifying spots have already gone to Atletico and Bayern, in that order, but with PSV currently three points behind Rostov, they can get on the same number of log points and force themselves into third position if they can get the goal difference in their favour. Should the Dutch team beat Rostov this week, they will also be on four, and if they can beat them by 2-0 then they will take third spot due to goal difference. They cannot win by 1-0 and hope to jump a spot as they have scored two less goals than the Russians.
For the Russians, they will be proud of their performance for a first time attempt in the Champions League, they managed a win and a draw for their four points and it was a shock win over the German giants Bayern 3-2 on their home turf that really shone the spotlight on them, especially after their 2-2 draw with PSV. Rostov will know that the all is in their court in this game in terms of holding onto third spot as they need only win, draw, or not lose by two goals to nil, or worse. The only problem is Rostov do not travel well as their first encounter against Bayern attests, where they lost 5-0 in Germany.
PSV vs Rostov: Previous encounter
The last time these teams met was in Russia and the home team were forced to take a draw against a PSV side that has been poor all season. Rostov opened the scoring in the 8th minute before PSV equalised. It was the same thing again in the 37th minute when Poloz got his second, PSV equalising in injury time of the first half. The game stayed that way with no action in the second half.
PSV vs Rostov: Prediction
PSV have really not been impressive at all in this campaign, a team that are a usual staple in the Champions League knockout stages, they will be embarrassed in where they find themselves. Rostov have shown far more fight and belief, their win over Bayern one for the history books; there may be nothing left in the Champions League to play for, but Rostov and PSV will both want a potential shot at Europa League qualification, but expect Rostov to have more in the tank and win this one by a small margin.
PSV vs Rostov: Tips
Poloz was the first player to score for Rostov in the Champions League, and he made it two in that first encounter against PSV. Expect him to get another goal, and for Rostov to win by a single goal.
