Real Garcilaso vs Santos
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 1 March 2018
Kick-off: 22:15 CET
There were a lot of rumours in Peru that Óscar Ibáñez, Real Garcilaso’s coach, could get fired just before this game against Santos, paying the price for their bad start of the season in the country’s championship. The Cuzco side have just four points from their first four matches, and just last Friday they lost 2-0 at Academia Cantolao. Ibáñez showed up at training Monday afternoon, as usual, and talking to the Press he called the rumours nothing more than “speculation”. It remains to be seen what will happen if they lose to Santos… They finished second in last season’s championship in Peru, and this is how they earned a direct ticket to the Copa Libertadores group stage. Ibáñez said he expects the altitude (3400 metres) to play some role, and asked the fans in Cuzco to fill up the stands, make Santos feel the… heat of Real Garcilaso’s fans, not only the city’s altitude.
Santos’ coach, Jair Ventura, was asked about Real Garcilaso, their pros, their cons, and he gave a… surprisingly long and detailed answer, naming one by one the Peruvian side’s strong points, as if… sending a message to his Real Garcilaso counterpart that Santos won’t get surprised. Jair said the altitude shouldn’t be a problem for his players, but, despite the fact that CONMEBOL asks the teams to be in the city where a game is schedule to be held at least 24 hours earlier, Santos decided to arrive in Cuzco just a few before before kick-off. Santos are going through their best period since the start the year. From 2-2-2 (wins-draws-defeats) in the Paulista championship, they have gone to 5-2-2, winning three games in a row by a total score of 5-0. On Sunday they beat Santo André 2-0 at home, and just before that, they had beaten São Paulo as well, 1-0, on the road. They have a big game coming up, against Corinthians, but at this point, the Copa Libertadores group stage opener is their priority, and Jair has implied that he is going to field his best possible team (taking into consideration, obviously, Real Garcilaso’s strong points and weaknesses). Santos finished third last season in Brazil’s championship, earning a direct ticket to the Copa Libertadores group stage.

Real Garcilaso vs Santos: Head to head Stats
This is the first game ever between these two sides.
Real Garcilaso vs Santos: Prediction
I’m thrilled to see Real Garcilaso be considered favourites, because I’m definitely backing Santos to earn at least a draw, and this way their double chance pays much better.
Real Garcilaso vs Santos: Betting Tips
Santos’ double chance, at 1.70, looks fantastic to me, despite Cuzco’s altitude. Santos are in great form, Real Garcilaso have left a lot to be desired these first weeks of the season in Peru, so I’m definitely backing Santos to leave Cuzco undefeated. Their win in “draw no bet” is at 2.37 betting odds.
