Riga vs Piast Gliwice
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: 1 August 2019
Kick-off: 18:30 CET
Ninety minutes in Gliwice last week, one attempt on target, two(!!) goals scored. This gives you an idea how satisfied Riga’s people were a week ago, leaving Poland with a “decent” 3-2 defeat, instead of a heavier score on their back. Riga’s second goal in the 86th minute was actually an own-goal, that’s how they scored twice despite having just one attempt on target. Mihails Konevs, their coach, expected better from his defense, pointing out that they had kept a clean sheet in five consecutive games before visiting Piast. On the other hand, as I pointed out last week in that preview, none of those teams Riga had recently faced was/is as strong as Piast. No game for them last weekend.
Piast finished the game last week on 14-4 attempts, the on target ones were 7-1, but as in their matches in the Champions League first qualifying round against BATE they struggled to make their superiority really matter. Against the team from Belarus they spent most of the 180 minutes being better than their rivals, but they still got eliminated. Last week, they needed three goals in a matter of 20 minutes (66’ to 85’) to take a good 3-1 lead, before shooting their own leg with that own goal in the 86th minute. Waldemar Fornalik, Piast’s coach, told reporters after the end of the match that they should have won by more than just one goal, looking mostly dissatisfied, rather than satisfied with the win. On Sunday, they visited Śląsk Wrocław, they were 0-1 up until the 84th minute, but they “managed” to lose 2-1. Ecuadorian attacking midfielder Joel Valencia did not play, and after the match, Fornalik said it was because he was slightly injured, not because he is close to leaving Piast. There are reports that he is about to move to England.
