Salford Red Devils vs Wigan Warriors
Competition: English Super League
Date: 11th February 2017
Venue: AJ Bell Stadium, Salford
Kickoff Time: 14:15 CET
Wigan are equal favourites to win the championship this year, after strong recruitment pushes in recent years, that have gained them superstars such as Sam Tomkins and Joe Burgess after mediocre results in the NRL. Nonetheless, Salford have solid playmakers, that will cause headaches to any team in the competition on their day, albeit probably inconsistently.
After the epic Grand Final loss, Wigan will be out to avenge the pain this season, and fully look to have the squad in place to do so, with the likes of Frank Paul Nuu’asuala and Thomas Lueluai leading the way, along with Tomkins, Burgess and George Williams.
Meanwhile, Salford will rely heavily upon the likes of former Cowboy Robert Lui, and NRL bad-boy Todd Carney as well as hard nuts such as Mark Flanagan and Weller Hauraki. Salford are sure to be aiming high with the acquisition of Carney, who on his day is comparable to the best playmakers on the planet. Overall, a top 8 finish, looms for the Red Devils and with some more astute personnel additions, it could be happy times for the fans.
Salford Red Devils vs Wigan Warriors: Head to Head Stats
Recent results is not pretty reading for the Red Devils, who have just 1 win in their last 6 clashes, all the while suffering some hidings, including a 45-4 drubbing in 2014. Their most recent clashes have not been so one-sided though, especially last season when the margins were just 3 and 4.
Forward dominance has been the key to the recent run of success for the Warriors, who have recorded more than 1000 metres gained more than the Salford outfit. Though, with such a controlling presence as Todd Carney provides, Salford will be focused on the now and their realistic chance of starting the season with a victory.
Salford Red Devils vs Wigan Warriors: Prediction
Both have cause for optimism heading into the new season, though Wigan are rightly favourites to win this clash, due to their class across the field. The creativity and support play of Sam Tomkins will be a highlight of the Warriors season and it could start early, against a Red Devils outfit, that doesn’t have a lot of elite quality in their backline.
The Warriors forwards too look to have a slight edge over their opponents, despite the aforementioned very good back-row players in the Salford squad. Overall, a close but comfortable win for the Grand Final losing Warriors outfit, but a very entertaining affair, with plenty of points scored.
