San Martin Tucuman vs Newell’s Old Boys
Competition: Argentina Superliga
Date: 8 December 2018
Kick-off: 01:00 CET
It’s been almost a whole week now, but I’m still in disbelief… Two minutes into the second half at city rivals Atlético Tucumán last Saturday, San Martín went 2-0 down. They were playing against one of the best teams in the country these last months, they had won just two of their 13 Superliga matches this season, but… somehow, someone could call it “miraculously”, they found the way to shorten the gap, equalize, and then score the winner, in the 75th minute. San Martín are on 16 points from 14 matches in the championship, right on the relegation line. If the season were over today, they would have to face San Martín San Juan in a knock-out play-off game to avoid relegation. No matter what happens in the remainder of the season though, that 2-3 at Atlético Tucumán will be remembered for years (by both sides).
Last Friday was a very tense day at Marcelo Bielsa, Newell’s Old Boys’ stadium; the referee delayed kick-off because he noticed some banners on the stands, with messages against the players of the home side. Newell’s had lost three of their last four games (the other match was a draw), a series of bad results that started with their elimination by city rivals Rosario Central in the Copa Argentina. Some of the fans turned against the squad, accusing them of lack of… heart, “balls”. The banners were withdrawn, the game started, and Newell’s ended up beating Aldosivi 1-0, thanks to an Héctor Fértoli goal in the 55th minute. Things remain… tense at the club; they are slightly above the relegation line, and their… trouble is double, as they need to start gathering points not just to avoid relegation this season, but also to avoid starting next season on a major disadvantage; if today was the first day of the 2019-2020 season, because of their position in the “promedio” table, Newell’s would be starting below the relegation line. On another note, they are still trying to reach a deal with a new full-time coach. Eduardo Domínguez, Diego Cocca, Fernando Gamboa, these three seem to appeal to Newell’s the most, but for the time being it’s still interim coach Héctor Bidoglio who’s in charge.
