Santos vs Atletico Mineiro
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 24 November 2018
Kick-off: 23:00 CET
Finally a point for Santos midweek, after four defeats in a row, but that 1-1 at home against Botafogo left hardly anyone satisfied. With two matches left, Santos have mathematically lost all hope of finishing in a Copa Libertadores position. Plus, soon after the game, Cuca revealed that he may need to take a break from coaching, because of a heart problem. Santos’ president said he has no knowledge of the issue, and counts on Cuca to still work there come January. He also said that the club’s finances are… healthy, and they don’t need to sell any key player, even though he admitted that if an offer comes and is really tempting, they will consider it. Uruguayan Carlos Sánchez, Paraguayan Derlis González, and Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz are back from international duty.
Unlike Santos who have lost pretty much all interest in earning points the last two game weeks of the season, Atlético Mineiro have a lot to play for; their huge 1-2 victory at Internacional on Wednesday kept them 6th in the table, which is the position that earns a team the last Copa Libertadores ticket for next season. Atlético Paranaense are three points behind them, but they may win the Copa Sudamericana, and earn a Libertadores ticket that way. Cruzeiro are four points behind them, but have already earned a Libertadores ticket by winning the Copa do Brasil. Botafogo are eight points behind, a gap impossible to close in the two game weeks remaining. So, basically, Atlético, right now, are left with… half an opponent in the fight to secure that 6th spot. Only two Série A teams have won their last three matches, and Atlético are one of those.

Santos vs Atletico Mineiro: Prediction
Atlético have a far bigger motive in this game, and have won three matches in a row. I’m backing them to earn at least a point at Vila Belmiro.
