Santos vs Cruzeiro
Competition: Copa do Brasil
Date: 2 August 2018
Kick-off: 00:30 CET
Santos missed incredible chances at home on Sunday, and ended up losing the game to América Mineiro, 0-1, an América who had… zero chances in the whole game, and their goal came from the penalty spot, with that penalty decision made by the referee, looking super dubious. On Monday, the club announced they had hired Cuca as the team’s new coach. On Tuesday, Cuca took charge, trained the team for the first time, and most of all expressed his support to the players, the current roster. Winger Rodrygo may not play against Cruzeiro, due to an injury. His situation remained unclear 24 hours before kick-off. Another winger, Eduardo Sasha, is a similar case. Center-back Lucas Veríssimo looks almost certain to miss this match. On another note, Santos are very close to signing Paraguayan winger Derlis González.
Mano Menezes chose to rest some of his regulars against Sao Paulo last weekend, Cruzeiro ended up losing the game at home, 0-2, and he knew he would face criticism for his choice, but he explained it, repeating what all coaches in Brazil say, especially those of teams playing in three competitions, that players are no robots, can’t keep playing three matches per week. Who can blame him? Actually, Cruzeiro created many big chances, they even missed a penalty, and I feel that the 0-2 was a very harsh result to them. Either way, the president himself said that the club’s priorities are the Copa do Brasil and the Copa Libertadores, not the championship, so… Good news for Cruzeiro is that they have attacking midfielder Thiago Neves and right midfielder Robinho back.

Santos vs Cruzeiro: Head to head Stats
Two wins for Santos and three for Cruzeiro in the last five games between these two with Santos as hosts.
Santos vs Cruzeiro: Prediction
Santos are playing at home, with their back against the wall after back-to-back poor results, they are in the relegation zone(!) in the championship, and they have a new coach. In other words, we should expect them to look… ready to taste blood in order to win this game, but I just don’t trust them as a team. They may win, but I have to back Cruzeiro, who, despite losing last weekend, have looked way more… serious and consistent after the World Cup finals break.
