Santos vs Flamengo
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 26 July 2018
Kick-off: 02:45 CET
Jair Ventura no more(!). Santos sacked their – former – coach the day after their goalless draw at Chapecoense. You could argue they did well or not, it’s a matter of… perspective, but I totally agree with those who criticized the timing. Santos had a five-week break during the World Cup finals, and there were a lot of signs even before the break that Jair Ventura was not enjoying the maximum of Santos officials’ trust. Instead of parting ways right before the break, so as to give a new coach the chance to work with the team for five weeks, they waited until now, as if some… miracle would happen, and those five weeks would make Jair Ventura more… suitable for Santos. Truth is, with him, most of Santos’ performances in the Série A were average, at best. The fact that they are just 15th in the table, on 15 points from 13 matches, speaks volumes. Good news is, 17-year-old attacker Rodrygo is back, after missing the trip to Chapecó. Chulapa has been named interim coach.
After losing at home to Sao Paulo last week, Flamengo were desperate to bounce back, so as to stay at the top of the Série A table. They rose to the occasion, beating Botafogo 2-0 at Maracana last weekend, scoring both goals in the first seven minutes(!). Matheus Savio said he meant to shoot in the 5th minute, said his goal was not… by accident, but what matters is that the ball went in, and about 120 seconds later, more than 40,000 Flamengo fans at the stadium were celebrating another goal. Ironically, Jefferson, Botafogo’s goalkeeper, got injured right there, and soon after that he had to leave the pitch. Generally, Flamengo were good, and if they had stayed more focused when counterattacking, they would have scored more. They remain leaders, on 30 points, one more than second-placed Sao Paulo.

Santos vs Flamengo: Head to head Stats
Interesting… The last two games between these two with Santos as hosts, were mouthwatering spectacles of many goals, two wins for Santos, 3-2 and 4-2, both last year, in the championship and the Copa do Brasil respectively. Before that, four consecutive Santos vs Flamengo matches had ended without goals(!).
Santos vs Flamengo: Prediction
With Jair Ventura gone, Santos players should have an extra motive to bounce back, show things. I don’t trust them, though.
