Santos vs Sao Paulo
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 16 September 2018
Kick-off: 21:00 CET
Up until a few weeks ago, Santos’ fans, reporters, “specialists”, used to be super critical of Gabriel Barbosa, for not delivering for his team, scoring very little, and generally “appearing” very little in Santos’ games. Ever since Cuca took over, things changed; after his two goals at Paraná last weekend, in his team’s 0-2 win, Gabigol is topping the scorers’ list in the championship, being the only one on 12 goals. He has scored six goals in their last four games in the Série A, including three in their 0-3 triumph in Rio de Janeiro over Vasco da Gama. Santos are hot, they have won four of their last five matches, the other one was a goalless draw with Gremio, and they have climbed 8th in the table. Their target at this point is to earn a Copa Libertadores ticket, something though that doesn’t depend exclusively on them. They may need a little “help” from other Brazilian clubs, winning international titles, so as to earn Brazil more than seven Libertadores tickets.
Sao Paulo were desperate to bounce back after their 1-0 defeat at Atlético Mineiro, and they did, beating Bahia 1-0 at home last weekend. Diego Souza scored in the 60th minute to give his team all three points, and stay hand-in-hand with Internacional at the top of the Série A table. That defeat to Atlético Mineiro is Sao Paulo’s only one in their last nine championship matches, but they have won just one of their last three. From scoring two goals or more in several games in a row, they have gone to scoring maximum once in their last five games. They remain decent defensively, but drawing alone won’t be enough in the last 14 matches of the season.

Santos vs Sao Paulo: Head to head Stats
Three wins for Santos, one for Sao Paulo, and a draw, in the last five games between these two with Santos as hosts.
Santos vs Sao Paulo: Prediction
Santos will play at a full house, as their fans made the tickets… disappear more than 48 hours before kick-off. They haven’t conceded in their last five matches, and are hosting a Sao Paulo side that has been struggling offensively lately. Even so, I don’t consider them favorites to win the game.
Santos vs Sao Paulo: Betting Tips
Despite liking – a lot – what I have seen from Santos lately, I expect Sao Paulo to leave Vila Belmiro with at least a point. The visitors’ double chance is at 1.57, and I won’t be surprised if they score a goal on a counterattack and “snatch” all three points. Their win in “draw no bet” is at 2.10.
