Sao Paulo vs Atletico Paranaense
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 21 October 2018
Kick-off: 00:00 CET
From bad to worse… Sao Paulo had just one win in six matches in the championship (a narrow one over Bahia at home), before losing back-to-back games to Palmeiras and Internacional. Yes, both were as guests, but still, they are supposed to be title contenders… They have been doing so badly for weeks and weeks now, that these last days there were even rumors about Uruguayan coach Diego Aguirre losing his job. Raí, a club legend who runs things as a director these days, was clear, they are not going to fire Aguirre, they expect the coach and the players to… sort things out. Do they still have time? They are fourth in the table, seven points behind leaders Palmeiras, with nine games left. Obviously, there is time left, but they need a… shock, and the fact that they are hosting a super competitive team (not a… doormat), makes their mission in this match even tougher.
Atlético Paranaense have gone from… flirting with relegation to challenging for a Copa Libertadores ticket, they have won six of their last seven matches in all competitions, the one they lost was at Santos, because of a ridiculous refereeing decision in added time, they me me feel like taking my hat off to them for their overall attitude after the World Cup finals break, but there is something that makes them look really bad; their scoring record away from home, not in all competitions, but in the Série A in particular. They have scored just four goals in 14 away matches this season, yes, four in 14, and have won none of those matches. The Copa Sudamericana is a very different story, and it will be very interesting to see how they’ll do on Wednesday, playing away from home, but against a fellow Brazilian side, Bahia. Their coach, Tiago Nunes, ruled out the possibility of playing with reserves against Sao Paulo, but he did say he needed to consult with his assistants and other members of the staff, to know which players are at their 100%, and who should get a rest this weekend, being more tired than the rest.

Sao Paulo vs Atletico Paranaense: Prediction
Sao Paulo are going through a massive crisis, but… they are hosting a team that seems practically unable to score and win away from home in the championship. Tricky… All things considered, I’m backing the hosts to finally win a game, and keep their hope – of winning the championship – somewhat alive.
Sao Paulo vs Atletico Paranaense: Betting Tips
Sao Paulo’s win is at 1.78. Their clean sheet pays better, 2.05. Last but not least, “Sao Paulo and under 2.5 goals” is at 3.40, the riskiest of my three tips, all suiting my 1-0 or 2-0 hunch.
