Saracens vs Toulon
Competition: European Rugby Champions Cup
Date: 21 January 2017
Kick-off: 16:15 CET
It is all very comfortable for Saracens as they prepare to take on the hugely successful Toulon in the last game in the pool stages. The English side have already qualified, but there is still work to be done for Toulon who have a chance, albeit slim, of being piped by Scarlets.
There should not be too much fear for Toulon, they are second and in pole position to qualify alongside Sarries, but they are still within reach of the Scarlets who can get to 15 points, equal with the French side, with a bonus point win over a weak Sale. It gets even more nervous for Toulon as their points difference is only three better than Scarlets so the Welsh side can come through with a good game. It means that Toulon obviously need to beat Saracens – at home, which is a very tough ask – or at least get a bonus point to really sink Scarlets.
Saracens are the only team that has not lost a single game in their five pool matches thus far. They did draw a game, as well as win the other four – and picked up two try bonus points – for their haul of 20 points. Still heavily favoured to retain their title as European champions, Sarries will probably also field a pretty decent side despite the result not meaning much as a double win over a team like Toulon will be a great bragging point – especially at home.
Saracens vs Toulon: Previous encounter
When these teams met in France, it was a watershed moment for the English side as this match was by far their toughest, and by winning at Toulon they set down their marker; 31-23 it finished in the opening pool game.
Saracens vs Toulon: Prediction
Saracens do not have to play their best team, but they are a squad full of depth, and are near impossible to beat at home on their artificial pitch. Toulon also are of course star studded and know they have to go in with a hope of winning to be assured qualification, but they are French and they are away from home. It will be a comfortable win for Sarries.
Saracens vs Toulon: Tips
Chris Ashton was the one to break Scarlets hearts with his late score for a draw, but it did show he is back and nabbing tries – as an ultimate finisher – he is a good bet for a try.
