Schalke vs RB Leipzig
Competition: Germany Bundesliga
Date: 16 March 2019
Kick-off: 15:30 CET
Schalke’s poor form in the Bundesliga, combined with their humiliating 7-0 defeat to Manchester City midweek in the Champions League, left the board of directors feeling they had to do something to shake things up. They did; Domenico Tedesco was fired, and Huub Stevens has been named interim coach. On top of everything else, Daniel Caligiuri got injured in last weekend’s 4-2 defeat at Werder Bremen, and is expected to stay out for no less than a month, and maybe up to six weeks. Schalke sit 14th in the table, just four points above 16th-placed Stuttgart, the team that if the season were over today, would have to go through play-offs to avoid relegation. Nübel, Bruma, Stambouli, Nastasic, McKennie, Serdar, Bentaleb, Oczipka, Embolo, Burgstaller and Skrzybski, these should be the first 11 for Schalke. Caligiuri and Schöpf are out, while Mascarell was considered doubtful the day before the match.
RB Leipzig have won their last four away matches in the Bundesliga, while interestingly all they managed in their three home games was three draws. Last weekend they had to settle for a single point when they hosted Augsburg (0-0). They gave Gladbach the chance to “catch” them in third place, with both teams now on 46 points. Their concern is to stay in the top four, so as to play Champions League football next season. Unlike Schalke, they didn’t play midweek. Gulacsi, Klostermann, Konate, Orban, Halstenberg, Sabitzer, Adams, Kampl, Laimer, Poulsen (he got slightly injured last weekend, but should be fine to start), and Werner, these should be the first 11 for Leipzig. Demme and Upamecano are out, while Haidara and Smith Rowe were considered doubtful the day before the game.
