Shandong Luneng vs Kashima Antlers
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 12 March 2019
Kick-off: 08:30 CET
You know what they say, “when things in a match don’t go as planned, if you can’t win, at least try not to lose”. That’s what Shandong Luneng did last week when they visited Gyeongnam. They took the lead in the first half, but two quick goals in the 60th and the 68th minute left them 2-1 down. They reacted and salvaged a point, with Italian striker Graziano Pellé scoring both their goals, the second one in the 77th minute a small piece of art. On Saturday, it was a Brazilian who didn’t play in Korea, Roger Guedes, who scored twice, at home, against Henan Jianye, another 2-2 draw. They are on four points from two matches in the Chinese Super League. About ten days ago it was Marouane Fellaini (he played the full 90 minutes at Gyeongnam) who scored for them, in their 1-0 victory at home over Beijing Renhe.
“Kashima and under 3.5 goals” (2.08) was the tip here last week, when the Antlers hosted Johor Darul Ta’zim on their AFC CL group stage debut. They won 2-1, scoring late in the first half and early in the second one. JDT got a goal back in the 80th minute, pushed for the equalizer, but Kashima played their cards correctly, and ended up with all three points. Their die-hard fans (behind one of the goals) were there, but as usually in Japanese stadiums, the rest of the fans were… mostly absent. This may look weird to people in Europe or South America, but in Japan (and other AFC countries), the domestic competitions attract infinitely more interest from fans, than the AFC Champions League. On Sunday, Kashima beat Shonan Bellmare 1-0 at home, their first win in three J1 League matches since the start of the season.
