Shanghai SIPG vs Jeonbuk Motors
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 19 June 2019
Kick-off: 14:00 CET
Shanghai SIPG had been flying from one win to another for weeks and weeks, but last Friday they lost 0-2 at home to Guangzhou Evergrande, a result that left them five points behind Chinese Super League leaders Beijing Guoan (whom they beat recently). That was only the second time in their last 17 matches in all competitions that they failed to score. As for their defeat, it was the first in over two months. Vítor Pereira, their Portuguese coach, told reporters his team are at least as good as Jeonbuk Motors, trying to look confident, but not… arrogant. Be reminded, SIPG needed a last-day win at home over indifferent Ulsan to qualify for the last 16, they earned nine points from six matches in their group, not exactly an… impressive number. What was impressive, was that they scored 13 goals in the group, but on the other hand, they conceded eight(!), one of the highest numbers among all teams qualified for the last 16.
Betting companies consider Jeonbuk Motors top favorites to lift the AFC Champions League trophy at the end of the season. Compared to SIPG’s 13-8 goals in the group stage, they had 7-3, with that 7 being uncharacteristically low by their standards. Last season for example, “wild” scores in their games was the norm. Not this season. It was… hard to believe that they earned just one point from two matches against Buriram United (a 0-0 at home), but on the other hand, they beat Beijing Guoan twice, the… same Beijing Guoan who are leading in China’s championship. If you’re wondering, “what made them change that much”, the answer could be two words: José Morais. The Portuguese took over in January, and he has obviously… prioritized tightening their defence, over focusing on scoring as many goals as possible. Last weekend they won at Incheon United, a narrow 0-1, thanks to a late goal. They are co-leading in Korea’s championship, level on points with Ulsan.

Shanghai SIPG vs Jeonbuk Motors: Head to head Stats
SIPG have hosted Jeonbuk once before, three years ago, in a Champions League quarterfinal. That game ended in a goalless draw.
Shanghai SIPG vs Jeonbuk Motors: Prediction
The hosts are considered slight favorites to win the game, but I wouldn’t bet on that. I prefer to focus on goals.
Shanghai SIPG vs Jeonbuk Motors: Betting Tips
“Under 2.5 goals” is at 1.73. For more than that, I would combine this with SIPG’s double chance, at 2.35.
