Slask Wroclaw vs Sandecja Nowy Sacz
Competition: Poland Ekstraklasa
Date: 3 March 2018
Kick-off: 15:30 CET
Slask Wroclaw came very close to leaving Poznan with an unexpected point. They would have, if Poland weren’t among the pioneers in world football, having adopted the VAR system since the start of the season. Seconds before the 90-minute mark, Lech scored, it would be 2-1, but the assistant referee raised his flag, believing that a Lech player was offside. The referee paused the game for about a minute, he was informed by his VAR assistants that there was no offside, goal for Lech, 2-1 indeed, and like that, Slask left Wroclaw empty-handed. You may like this VAR thing, you may not, but one thing is for sure, justice is done. It may take some time, but even that is being improved. At the start of the season, referees would go watch something on a TV screen, on the sidelines, and sometimes it would take them 3-4 minutes to decide on something. These days, the referees only go to that sideline TV screen if it’s absolutely necessary. Usually they stay put on the pitch, and their VAR assistants do the job. Slask are 11th in the table, eight points behind 8th-placed Wisla Plock, with very few chances of making it to the top-8.
Sandecja have lost very few games without making their opponents… spit blood before beating them, and their midweek 1-0 loss in Nieciecza to Zaglebie Lubin was no exception. Even after the 66th minute, when they were reduced to 10 men, they kept fighting, giving their all for that equaliser that would salvage at least a point for them. They had gone 1-0 down just before halftime. No good, they lost the game, they are at the bottom of the table, as I have written before I do expect them (and Nieciecza) to get relegated after the extra round of the teams placed 9th and lower in the table, but similarly, I expect them to keep fighting with everything they’ve got. It’s not much, but they definitely make it hard to all opponents to beat them.
